Borussia Dortmund vs Union Berlin Full Match Reports
Two quick goals in the second half moved Borussia Dortmund ahead of Union Berlin and into first place in the Bundesliga, ending a seven-game losing streak for the Ironmen in all competitions.
BVB, who were two points clear at the top of the Bundesliga before kick-off, were aiming for a 19-game unbeaten run at home, but faced a struggling Union side still reeling from yet another defeat in the UEFA Champions League final. Dortmund took the lead for the fourth time in the fifth leg when Niklas Furkrug hit the post with his second shot from a corner kick. However, Union hit back soon after their own corner with Robin Gosens heading the ball past Gregor Kobel.
Alex Krall thought he had scored his first goal in German football with a header from a set piece, but VAR intervened due to an offside position. On the other hand, another classic situation led to the goal being canceled when Marco Reus’s inside-swinging ball touched the offside Fürkrk. A breathless first 30 minutes ended with Union taking the lead thanks to a penalty from Leonardo Bonucci, the oldest Italian scorer in Bundesliga history.
The Black & Yellows tied the game just after the break with a shot by Nico Schlotterbeck into the top right corner. Just five minutes later, Dortmund regained the lead when Reus played a powerful pass to Julian Brandt and the 27-year-old fired the ball into the net. When the game ended an hour later, and coach Edin Terzic’s team took charge, the turbulent battle calmed down somewhat. The two second-half goals were the lowest in the league in recent Bundesliga matches this season, and after an impressive first-half performance, it doesn’t bode well for a Union side who are currently chasing the game, with the game out of reach. It seemed like that. Former Union player Julian Ryerson grabbed the loose ball and sent the deflected shot into the net, giving BVB a two-goal lead.
In the end, the hosts did enough to get the game through from there, continuing their perfect H2H home record against Union (W7) as they took three points and climbed to the top of the table. Union have suffered five consecutive defeats for the first time in Bundesliga history and are languishing in the bottom half of the Bundesliga standings.
