Mainz vs Bayern Munich Full Match Reports
Bayern Munich remained in step with their table-topping rivals, securing a 3-1 victory against Mainz and ending their three-game Bundesliga losing streak at the Mewa Arena. The home team continued to wait for their first league win in the 2023/24 season.
Last season, Bayern’s stranglehold on the Bundesliga crown appeared to slip when they suffered a comprehensive defeat to Mainz towards the end of the campaign. However, it was Mainz who thwarted Borussia Dortmund’s title aspirations with a draw on the final day. Nevertheless, since that crucial result in April, Mainz hasn’t tasted victory, and their hopes of a fourth consecutive home win against Bayern dwindled within the first 10 minutes. Leroy Sané orchestrated a counter-attack, passing it wide to Kingsley Coman, who expertly slotted his shot into the far corner.
Mainz nearly provided an immediate response, as Lee Jae-sung’s header was brilliantly tipped onto the post by Sven Ulreich. However, they quickly regretted missing that opportunity. Head tennis at the opposite end allowed Leon Goretzka to deliver a cross for Harry Kane, who scored his ninth goal of the season with a header. Bo Svensson deserves credit for his fearless tactics, which got Mainz back into the game just before halftime. Brajan Gruda advanced to set up Anthony Caci on the left flank, and the Frenchman unleashed an unstoppable shot into the far top corner.
As the second half progressed, Bayern’s need for a third goal became evident, with Caci’s attempt bouncing wide after a surging run by Danny da Costa. The scare provided the visitors with the motivation to secure the crucial breathing space, and Jamal Musiala brilliantly set up Goretzka, who fired in a low drive. Mainz’s performance improved significantly as the match neared its end, but Gruda’s shot hitting the post after an excellent run summed up their night.
Despite the three points, Bayern did not move to the top of the Bundesliga table, as Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart had already secured wins earlier on Saturday. Nevertheless, Thomas Tuchel will be content that they remain within striking distance, especially considering the trouble they’ve had in this fixture in recent years. On the other hand, the pressure mounts on Svensson, and his team is at risk of falling to the bottom of the table, given their seventh-worst start in the Bundesliga’s 61-year history.
Player of the Match: Leon Goretzka (Bayern Munich)
