Bulgaria vs Lithuania Full Match Reports

Lithuania ended their winless streak on Bulgarian soil and secured their first victory in 16 matches with a 2-0 triumph over Bulgaria in their 2024 UEFA European Championships qualifying (UECQ) encounter.

The game didn’t lack early chances as Vykintas Slivka saw his shot saved by Ivan Dyulgerov, while Kiril Despodov’s header sailed over the bar at the opposite end. Lithuania seemed to have found the net through Fedor Černych, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Later in the first half, Spas Delev had a close-range shot saved by Emilijus Zubas after a defensive mix-up by Lithuania. However, just before halftime, the game took a dramatic turn.

Bozhidar Kraev received his second booking and was sent off, and within three minutes, Lithuania seized the lead through Pijus Širvys. It marked his first international goal as he slotted the ball home following a corner, doubling the visitors’ advantage heading into the second half.

Širvys continued his impressive performance by scoring again ten minutes into the second period, heading in at the back post in his ninth international appearance. Černych came close to making it three after the hour mark, but his attempt was crucially blocked by substitute Simeon Petrov.

Lithuania found the net once more, but the goal was disallowed following a VAR check. Justas Lasickas drilled the ball into the bottom corner after Lithuania won it high up the pitch, but substitute Arvydas Novikovas was ruled to be interfering with play from an offside position.

While the result doesn’t significantly impact either team’s qualification hopes, with Bulgaria remaining on two points and Lithuania on five (half as many as Hungary and Serbia in first and second place, despite having played more games), Edgaras Jankauskas’s team can take pride in finally breaking their winless streak. On the other hand, Bulgaria has now gone four home games without a victory.

Pijus Širvys was named the Man of the Match for his standout performance.
