Cyprus vs Norway Full Match Reports

Norway secured a resounding 4-0 victory over Cyprus at the AEK Arena in Larnaca, breathing fresh life into their quest for a top-two finish and qualification for the 2024 European Championships. The Lions, who have now triumphed in each of the last 13 face-offs against Cyprus, had their hopes pinned on this win.

Entering the match, Norway knew that a win was imperative to maintain their slim chances of clinching a top-two position. They were trailing Spain by just two points in the race, but Spain still had a game in hand. As expected, they dominated possession right from the start against their comparatively smaller opponents. However, it took them about 20 minutes to craft their first genuine goal-scoring opportunity. Not surprisingly, it was Erling Haaland who found himself in the spotlight. The striker soared above a defender to meet Fredrik Aursnes’ cross and unleashed a powerful header toward the goal. But Cyprus goalkeeper Joël Mall pulled off a remarkable save to deny him.

Ståle Solbakken’s team persisted in their offensive endeavors, and their persistence bore fruit in the 33rd minute. It was Alexander Sørrloth whose shot struck a hefty deflection and sailed into the top-right corner of the net, leaving Mall with no chance. Although Cyprus were grateful to go into halftime trailing by just a single goal, Norway didn’t let up, maintaining their dominance as the game continued.

Before the hour mark, Mall was called into action once more as Sander Berge received the ball at the edge of the box and unleashed a fierce shot, only to be thwarted by the agile keeper. However, Norway did extend their lead just minutes later. Aursnes’ corner found its way to Haaland, who, displaying his striking prowess, rifled a powerful volley into the net, leaving no room for a response.

Following the second goal, Norway appeared to be in their element and further bolstered their lead with less than 20 minutes remaining. Substitute Antonio Nusa delivered a sublime cross, which was met by Haaland for another goal, tallying six goals in four international matches for the Ballon d’Or nominee. With just over 10 minutes left, Norway added a fourth when Aursnes capitalized on a loose ball in the box, calmly finding the bottom corner and scoring his debut international goal.

With their comfortable victory over Cyprus, Norway has rekindled their hopes of a top-two finish. However, Spain’s 2-0 triumph over Scotland in Seville maintains Norway’s third-place standing for the time being. In contrast, Cyprus finds themselves anchored at the bottom of Group A, with any mathematical hopes of a top-two finish permanently extinguished. This unfortunate situation follows six consecutive defeats in Group A, during which they conceded a total of 21 goals.

Fredrik Aursnes, who played a pivotal role in Norway’s success, was deservedly named the Man of the Match.
