United States vs Germany Full Match Reports

Germany regained their footing in their preparation for UEFA Euro 2024 with a 3-1 victory over the USA in Julian Nagelsmann’s debut as the head coach of the German national team. This second win in seven games provides Die Nationalelf with a foundation to build upon in anticipation of next year’s tournament.

Nagelsmann took the reins of Germany for the first time after taking over from Hansi Flick. As the hosts of the upcoming European Championships, the Germans have been engaged in a series of friendly matches. During this international break, they found themselves in North America, squaring off against the USA and Mexico. Their initial challenge was the USMNT, who had a strong start in Connecticut. Christian Pulisic found himself with a clear path to the goal and slotted the ball past Marc-André ter Stegen. However, the winger’s opening goal was disallowed for offside.

Germany took heed of this early warning and began asserting control over the game. They controlled possession, and Pascal Groß’s shot from the edge of the box rattled off the post. Despite their dominance, Germany found themselves trailing as Pulisic showcased a moment of individual brilliance. Starting on the left flank, he cut inside and curled a sublime finish into the top corner, sending the US crowd into a frenzy. The Germans responded well and equalized before halftime when İlkay Gündoğan capitalized on a loose ball in the box, finishing with aplomb after some initial slick work by Leroy Sané.

Although it was a friendly match, Nagelsmann undoubtedly sought a stronger second-half performance. The attacking intent was evident right from the start as Niclas Füllkrug began to trouble the USMNT defense. He had a shot saved at the near post before putting Germany ahead on the hour mark after being set up by Robin Gosens. The Dortmund striker then turned provider, squaring the ball in the box to Jamal Musiala, who had the straightforward task of tapping it into an empty net.

US coach Gregg Berhalter made several changes in the hope of sparking a response after a lackluster second-half performance, but to no avail. The German players comfortably maintained their lead, securing back-to-back victories following their win against France in the previous international break.

Niclas Füllkrug was named the Man of the Match for his standout performance.
