Monaco vs Lyon Full Match Reports
In a surprising turn of events, Olympique Lyonnais, positioned at the bottom of the table, orchestrated a shock by becoming the first visiting team in this Ligue 1 season to depart Stade Louis II with three points. They weathered the AS Monaco storm and struck late to secure a 1-0 victory.
Riding high on their 3-0 triumph over Toulouse the previous week, Lyon initiated the match brightly but failed to challenge home goalkeeper Philipp Köhn. The initial opportunity presented itself to Monaco on the 12th minute when Takumi Minamino set up Folarin Balogun, yet his shot was thwarted by Anthony Lopes, and Krépin Diatta’s attempt on the rebound was blocked by Nicolás Tagliafico. Lyon quickly countered, thinking they had taken the lead, but Ernest Nuamah’s finish was disallowed for a clear offside. It wasn’t until the final 10 minutes of the half that Monaco began to assert their dominance; Balogun and Maghnes Akliouche forced remarkable saves from Lopes, but Adi Hütter’s team couldn’t break the deadlock before halftime.
Les Rouges et Blancs sustained their pressure in the second half, with Mohamed Camara’s powerful drive hitting the outside of the post in the 53rd minute. In a rare offensive move two minutes later, Lyon had their first on-target effort as Alexandre Lacazette, buoyed by his hat-trick last week, tried his luck from 25 yards, only to be denied by Köhn. The status quo resumed shortly after, with Youssouf Fofana dragging an effort wide and Balogun posing a continual threat, the latter denied by Lopes.
When Fofana’s header from a corner narrowly missed the target 15 minutes from time, it seemed Monaco would settle for a draw. However, their fortunes took a downturn five minutes from the end when Ainsley Maitland-Niles orchestrated a superb counterattack down the right, squaring to Jeffinho, who slotted his first goal of the season past Köhn. Pierre Sage’s side secured consecutive victories for the first time, lifting themselves off the bottom of the table, while Monaco suffered their first home defeat since the conclusion of the last season.
Man of the Match: Anthony Lopes (Olympique Lyonnais).
