West Ham United vs Newcastle United Full Match Reports

In a dramatic 2-2 draw at the London Stadium, West Ham United salvaged a point with an 89th-minute equalizer from Mohammed Kudus, further compounding Newcastle United’s woes in the Premier League (PL) away from home, where they have managed only one victory in six matches.

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side had entered this contest on a high note following their resounding triumph over Paris Saint-Germain midweek. However, it took just eight minutes for the Hammers to bring them back down to earth. A sublime pass from Lucas Paquetá set Emerson free down the left channel. Emerson’s exquisite first touch eluded the advancing Nick Pope, enabling him to square the ball to Tomáš Souček for a simple finish into an empty net.

Newcastle found themselves on the back foot and narrowly escaped going down to 10 men after Bruno Guimarães’ late challenge on James Ward-Prowse went unpunished, moments after the Brazilian had received a yellow card. Surviving that scare, the visitors gradually found their footing in the game, with midweek goal scorers Miguel Almirón and Dan Burn coming close to an equalizer before halftime.

The Magpies displayed improved form in the second half, forcing Alphonse Areola into action to deny Alexander Isak’s effort. Isak then found the back of the net moments later, capitalizing on Edson Álvarez’s errant headed clearance to slot home the equalizer at the back post.

Within five minutes of drawing level, Newcastle surged ahead as Isak hit the target once again. West Ham’s defenders appeared to halt their efforts, believing Kieran Trippier was offside. However, Trippier’s delivery found Isak, who tapped in to put Newcastle in front. Moyes’ side needed to mount a response, but they struggled to contain the visitors and were fortunate not to concede a second goal when Isak rounded Areola. Unfortunately for Isak, his angled effort struck the post.

The introduction of Kudus from the bench injected new life into West Ham. In the 89th minute, he delivered a stunning strike to rescue a point. Kudus received the ball on the edge of the area and unleashed a powerful left-footed shot that beat Pope for pace, sending the London Stadium crowd into jubilation as he scored his first PL goal.

This late surge from David Moyes’ side kept them above Newcastle in the standings and within three points of the top four. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s quest for a win was halted, marking the end of their four-match unbeaten streak.

Alexander Isak of Newcastle United earned the accolade of Man of the Match for his influential performance.
