Cagliari vs AS Roma Full Match Reports
Romelu Lukaku showcased his striking prowess once more, notching a splendid brace to tally seven goals in as many games for Roma. The Giallorossi strolled to a commanding 4-1 victory over struggling Cagliari, securing their third triumph within a mere week.
Despite Cagliari’s abysmal inception to this Serie A (SA) campaign, a palpable fervor resonated throughout the Unipol Domus stadium. Eusebio Di Francesco, the former Roma tactician, was in dire need of significant contributions on the field. Interestingly, he chose to omit Zito Luvumbo, the scorer of Cagliari’s solitary two Serie A goals this season, from the starting lineup. In contrast, his adversary, the ex-Chelsea maestro José Mourinho, arrived in Sardinia under the looming specter of job insecurity. Last season’s UEFA Europa League finalists had initiated the current domestic campaign sluggishly, amassing merely two victories from their opening seven fixtures, coupled with two draws and three losses. However, the narrative took an abrupt turn by the midpoint of the opening half.
First, Matteo Prati’s errant pass, intercepted by Edoardo Bove, eventually paved the way for Leonardo Spinazzola to dispatch a precise through-ball into the path of Houssem Aouar. The midfielder converted the opportunity with precision from close quarters, propelling the visitors into the lead. Almost immediately, Roma bolstered their advantage. Lukaku exhibited exquisite control, laying off the ball to Paulo Dybala, who, in turn, found Rick Karsdorp. Although Karsdorp faced a daunting task, he galloped down the right flank and delivered a sublime cross. Lukaku, displaying remarkable composure, confidently guided the ball into the net with his chest. Admirably, Cagliari refused to capitulate following this fresh setback, but Ranieri discerned the urgency of introducing Luvumbo before halftime to resuscitate their hopes of a comeback.
Shortly after the second half commenced, Lukaku had an opportunity to double his tally, but an unfortunate loss of balance resulted in a skewed effort from close range. Andrea Belotti, however, managed to secure the third goal approximately five minutes later, despite a VAR scrutiny for offside. The former Torino talisman capitalized on Leandro Paredes’ exquisite lofted pass, executed a masterful turn to outfox Mateusz Wieteska, and unleashed a precise strike into the net. The outcome was incontrovertible by this juncture, and the net rippled for a fourth occasion when Belotti deftly laid the ball back to Paredes. The Argentine midfielder effortlessly located Lukaku, who elegantly dispatched the ball into the net.
Although Cagliari salvaged a consolation goal through Nahitan Nández, courtesy of a penalty awarded for handball against Bryan Cristante, the resounding triumph solidified Roma’s position in the top ten as they approached the international break. Conversely, their newly promoted adversaries continued their quest for their maiden SA victory in the 2023/24 season.
Romelu Lukaku, with his stellar performance, undoubtedly earned the coveted Man of the Match distinction, reaffirming his pivotal role for Roma.
