Genoa vs AC Milan Full Match Reports
Christian Pulisic’s goal in the 87th minute secured a fourth straight league win for AC Milan and propelled them to the top of the Serie A standings.
Milan aimed to get back on track with a victory in their last match before the international break, following a goalless draw against Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League earlier in the week. The visitors showed potential in the first 20 minutes of the game, with Alessandro Florenzi’s shot being saved by Josep Martínez, and Tijjani Reijnders forcing the goalkeeper to make a good save – although the offside flag may have helped Genoa regardless.
As the first half continued, Milan were struggling to find good scoring chances against a team that had performed well in their previous two home matches against Napoli and Roma. Although the recently-promoted hosts were unable to pose a challenge for Mike Maignan in the first half, they would have been satisfied that they did not concede a goal before the break. Unsatisfied with the lackluster performance from his team in the first half, Milan manager Stefano Pioli made the decision to bring on offensive players Christian Pulisic and Rafael Leão during halftime.
Leão nearly justified his manager’s choice when, around the 60th minute, he rose high in the penalty area to connect with Florenzi’s lofted pass and forced an excellent save from Martínez. As the visitors became increasingly frustrated, Genoa started to pose a threat in the last 15 minutes of the match. Radu Drăgușin’s shot, which was deflected, tested Maignan’s reflexes.
Just when it appeared that Genoa had successfully earned a point through their efforts, their hard work was undone towards the end. Pulisic gathered a cross in the box, swiftly turned around, and shot with his left foot into the lower corner, causing the visiting fans to celebrate with great enthusiasm. There was additional late suspense as Maignan received a direct red card for a risky tackle in injury time, leading to Olivier Giroud stepping in as a makeshift goalkeeper.
In even more astonishing moments, the opposing goalkeeper, Martínez, was then sent off in the last moments of added time. Despite the chaotic situation, Milan successfully managed to survive the remaining seconds and end the game on top as they entered the international break. On the other hand, Genoa currently hold a position of 15th in the standings, with a comfortable lead of four points ahead of the relegation zone.
Christian Pulisic (AC Milan) was named the Player of the Match.
