AC Milan vs Borussia Dortmund Full Match Reports
Borussia Dortmund clinched their spot in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) round of 16 with an impressive 3-1 victory over AC Milan, extending Die Borussen’s unbeaten streak in head-to-head clashes to four matches (W3, D1).
Despite heading to Milan perched atop Group F after two consecutive ‘to nil’ triumphs against Newcastle United on matchdays three and four, Dortmund faced a determined host side. The early minutes saw referee István Kovács pointing to the penalty spot when Samuel Chukwueze’s close-range strike met the arm of Nico Schlotterbeck. Olivier Giroud took the penalty but failed as Gregor Kobel made a comfortable save.
In a fortunate turn of events, Dortmund received a penalty just four minutes later when Davide Calabria fouled Jamie Bynoe-Gittens in the box. Unlike Giroud, Marco Reus capitalized on the opportunity, firing a clinical strike into the top-left corner to give the visitors the lead. After a frantic start, the pace eased, and Milan found an equalizer eight minutes before halftime when Chukwueze unleashed a fierce shot from the right wing.
Although Milan aimed to carry the momentum into the second half, Dortmund retook the lead before the hour mark through Bynoe-Gittens, who slotted a low finish beyond Mike Maignan. Despite coming from behind in the first half, Milan pursued another equalizer in the final 25 minutes, with a sense of desperation setting in as the prospect of finishing the night at the bottom of Group F loomed.
In the end, Milan’s desperation proved detrimental as Dortmund extended their lead in the 69th minute. Maignan struggled to deal with Karim Adeyemi’s strike from 20 yards, marking Adeyemi’s first goal of the season. The visitors comfortably navigated the closing stages to secure their place in the UCL knockout stage. Milan will aim to rebound against Newcastle on matchday six in a bid to snatch second place ahead of Newcastle and Paris Saint-Germain.
Man of the Match: Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund).
