Real Sociedad vs Salzburg Full Match Reports

Real Sociedad, already assured of a spot in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) last 16, experienced a deviation from their usual triumphs, settling for a 0-0 draw against RB Salzburg at Anoeta. Despite this, the Basque side remains in a commanding position to top Group D.

Entering the match as clear favorites and bound for the knockout stage, Real Sociedad initially displayed apparent control. Captain Mikel Oyarzabal orchestrated the game, testing Alexander Schlager early on. However, Salzburg, under Gerhard Struber’s counter-attacking strategy, nearly executed a perfect plan. Petar Ratkov sent Nene Dorgeles through, flicking over Álex Remiro, hitting the woodwork in an agonizing near miss.

After that close call, Sociedad dominated, but frustration mounted. Arsen Zakharyan’s shot was thwarted by an improvised Schlager save, and Beñat Turrientes couldn’t scramble the ball in from close range. Salzburg’s defensive approach stifled Sociedad, and the home side’s counterattack before halftime fell short, as Zakharyan’s ball missed both Oyarzabal and the net.

Salzburg improved ball possession after the break, with Dorgeles causing issues, albeit with a focus on winning a penalty rather than taking shots. Despite Sociedad finding the target more, Schlager denied Brais Méndez’s curling effort and stopped Zakharyan at the near post.

The introductions of Takefusa Kubo and Umar Sadiq injected urgency, but Schlager continued to deny Sociedad. As Inter also drew their match, Sociedad must avoid defeat at San Siro for a seeded berth in the last 16 draw, a historic achievement. Benfica’s proximity to Salzburg means a matchday six loss by more than two goals would eliminate any hope of the Austrians dropping into the UEFA Europa League.

Man of the Match: Alexander Schlager (RB Salzburg).
