Red Star Belgrade vs RB Leipzig Full Match Reports
RB Leipzig secured their spot in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) in impressive fashion, making it their fourth appearance in five seasons. They emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over Crvena Zvezda, courtesy of superb goals from Xavi Simons and Lois Openda.
Right from the start, Leipzig took control of the game and wasted no time in breaking the deadlock against their opponents, who had failed to keep a clean sheet in their previous five matches. It was Xavi who delivered a moment of brilliance just eight minutes into the game, showcasing his skill with a mesmerizing run into the penalty area before unleashing a thunderous finish that nestled into the top-right corner. While Leipzig continued to dominate possession, Crvena Zvezda tightened up their defense and threatened on the counter as the first half progressed. The equalizer almost arrived when Janis Blaswich spilled a routine cross, and Mirko Ivanić came close to capitalizing on the opportunity, only to be denied by the shot-stopper’s intervention.
However, Crvena Zvezda’s momentary glimpse of hope didn’t materialize into anything substantial, and Leipzig regained control. Openda came close to doubling their lead with a deflected strike from 20 yards. Just before halftime, Die Roten Bullen came close to paying the price for their missed chances as Zvezda carved through their defense, but Blaswich made a crucial stop to push Osman Bukari’s clipped finish behind.
Aware of the consequences of a defeat, the Belgrade outfit displayed a strong attacking intent in the second half. Leipzig, on the other hand, knew that a victory would secure their progression, and they posed a significant threat. Benjamin Šeško came inches away from finding the back of the net with a powerful low strike from 25 yards that struck the post. Despite having scored in every match prior to this encounter, Barak Bakhar’s side couldn’t extend that streak as Cherif Ndiaye’s fierce snapshot inside the area was brilliantly saved by Blaswich.
Ultimately, Crvena Zvezda’s hopes of qualification were dashed when Openda displayed his blistering pace, racing from the halfway line, cutting inside, and unleashing an unstoppable strike beneath the diving Omri Glazer. The hosts managed to grab a late consolation goal when Benjamin Henrichs inadvertently headed Guélor Kanga’s cross into his own net, but it was too little, too late for the 1991 European Cup champions. In the end, Leipzig’s dominance prevailed throughout the match, and their progression from Group G served as the perfect response to their recent domestic setbacks.
Man of the Match: Xavi Simons (RB Leipzig).
