Salzburg vs Inter Full Match Reports
The UEFA Champions League (UCL) runners-up from last season, Inter Milan, secured their place in the knockout stages with two matches to spare, triumphing 1-0 against RB Salzburg. The decisive goal came from Lautaro Martínez, who has established himself as a prolific away scorer in this competition, with nine of his last 12 goals coming on foreign soil.
Inter’s head coach, Simone Inzaghi, made the strategic decision to initially leave Martínez on the bench. However, RB Salzburg started stronger, and goalkeeper Yann Sommer had to react quickly to deny Roko Šimić, son of former Inter defender Dario, with a smothering save. Šimić’s legitimate claim for a penalty went unanswered when he was brought down by Carlos Augusto during a corner. Inter came close to compounding the hosts’ sense of injustice when Hakan Çalhanoğlu delivered a pinpoint free-kick into the box, finding Alessandro Bastoni unmarked. However, Bastoni failed to capitalize, highlighting why he has not scored for his club since January 2022 by glancing a header wide of the post. Yet, his miss paled in comparison to Davide Frattesi’s miscued effort from 15 yards, with a golden chance wasted after a delightful setup by Alexis Sánchez.
Despite enjoying over 60% possession in the first half, Salzburg struggled to convert their attacking plays in the final third. They continued their pursuit for a fourth consecutive victory but found themselves under pressure at times, particularly when Çalhanoğlu’s set-piece created a moment of uncertainty for goalkeeper Alexander Schlager. Nonetheless, the Austrians had an opportunity to break the deadlock on a swift counterattack led by Šimić, but Oscar Gloukh squandered the chance, firing over the bar when he should have tested Sommer, who later had to make a crucial save from Karim Konaté’s shot.
Inzaghi eventually introduced Martínez, as well as Nicolò Barella, just after the hour mark. It was substitute Kristjan Asllani who nearly deceived Schlager with a long-range effort. Martínez’s impact was immediate, with his header from Bastoni’s cross striking the crossbar after Schlager’s fingertips deflected it. However, the breakthrough arrived when Barella’s shot was blocked by Mads Bidstrup’s outstretched arm, resulting in a penalty that was calmly converted by the FIFA World Cup winner.
With just five minutes remaining in regular time, Inter comfortably saw out the victory, eliminating RB Salzburg from contention. Their remaining aim in the group stage is to secure a third-place finish, which will grant them qualification for the Europa League. However, their upcoming fixture against group leaders Real Sociedad poses a stern test.
The Man of the Match honor goes to Roko Šimić for his impressive performance in RB Salzburg’s defense.
