Argentina vs Paraguay Full Match Reports
Argentina extended their remarkable unbeaten streak to 13 games with a comfortable 1-0 victory over Paraguay. This win marks Lionel Scaloni’s 46th victory in 63 games as the manager of the Albiceleste.
Argentina entered the match as one of just two teams, the other being Brazil, with a perfect 100% win record in their FIFA World Cup qualifying group, despite this being only the third round of fixtures. In their quest to maintain this record, La Albiceleste wasted no time, launching a swift offensive to open the scoring within the first three minutes. A corner from Rodrigo De Paul was elegantly volleyed into the net by Nicolás Otamendi, marking the defender’s first international goal in over five years.
Playing within the vibrant Estadio Monumental, the home side had no intentions of sitting back on their one-goal lead. Instead, they created a flurry of chances during the first half. However, a combination of wayward finishing and exceptional goalkeeping thwarted their attempts to extend the lead. De Paul was denied by the woodwork just before halftime, and opportunities from Lautaro Martínez and Julián Álvarez narrowly missed the target.
Paraguay was largely uninspiring during the first half, mainly defending their goal. However, they came out of the gates flying in the second half and could have immediately equalized if not for Emiliano Martínez’s remarkable save, deflecting Ramón Sosa’s powerful shot around the post. In the second half, the visitors displayed more attacking intent and began to unsettle the Argentine players as tempers flared.
To regain control of the game, Scaloni introduced Lionel Messi less than 10 minutes into the second half. Almost instantly, Argentina’s performance improved significantly with the presence of the Inter Miami player, who orchestrated the game with masterful precision.
Despite Messi’s influence, Argentina failed to secure a second goal and had to work harder than expected to maintain their lead. Paraguay threatened to level the score, but ultimately, time ran out for Albirroja, who now find themselves in ninth place in the qualifying group, having not won any of their first three games.
Nicolás Otamendi of Argentina was named the Man of the Match for his outstanding performance.
